About Us

Faculty, staff, and students across the Emory University campus use institutional data to make informed decisions and actions. Institutional data must be protected and managed at all levels to ensure their integrity.

graphicData governance is the practice of authority and control over the management of data assets throughout the Emory community. A shared mindset of data governance positions individuals to make strategic and operational decisions based on complete, accurate, and reliable information.

Institutional data are defined as all data created, collected, maintained, recorded, managed, or used by university employees in the performance of official job duties to understand and describe the institution and its activities. The description of the university and its operations developed through what we measure, analyze and report are valuable assets in support of the university's teaching, research, and public service missions.

The Office of Institutional Research and Decision Support (IRDS), part of the Office of Planning and Adminstration, is the designated office of official data collection and reporting of institutional data for Emory. The university is required by law to provide data reports annually in addition to reports they prepare for internal and external stakeholders.

Emory's Institutional Data Management Policy outlines a data management framework designed to maintain the quality of institutional data and promote and safeguard the appropriate and effective use of institutional data.
